The Dream Lives On
Freedom, the quality or state of being free, especially political and civil liberties and Discrimination, unfair treatment of a person, racial group, minority, etc; action based on prejudice. Both concepts have been present since the existence of historic records, either being for the color of your skin, beliefs and even your social or economic status in society. There have been many attempts to change the ways of society but one of if not the most important one was by Dr. Martin Luther King jr, he was a sign of freedom and equality amongst all races, one of his most memorable contributions to the civil right movement was the “I Have a Dream” speech.The first time I read this speech was about one week ago before than and for the past 10 years the words segregation, discrimination or even freedom and equality were distant to me, it was taken for granted as it is by many others as well. I have lived in the bubble of the Chilean upper middle class society where all is well, everyone is equal and foreigners like myself are welcomed with open arms. The speech has opened my eyes to the reality of the ways of whom believed to be the supreme American.”The negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land” this is one of many shocking yet truthful lines in Dr. King’s address to the nation which explains the segregation of white people from the rest of the races in the US. Equality and freedom was the reason of the gathering of thousands and viewing of millions of supporters or the curious ones who were seeking to further educate themselves on the matter. Also noticeable during the speech was the way the bond between the cultures and races. “For many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny” strong words said as the applause of many erupted.
