In 1969 it existed as Yellowhammers Polytechnic. The school did not gain its university status until 1992. Once gaining University status they started to expand. The Deleted campus was built in 1994. That campus teaches business classes and science and engineering. In 1 994, another big thing also happened for the University. They became the first university in the United Kingdom to be rewarded the Charter Mark. The Charter Mark is an award for excellence in customer service. The Universities next branch opened its doors in 1995.

The next branch was the second branch in Yellowhammers called Yellowhammers Science Park. This branch was built to focus on relationships with the community. It is where the Creative Industries Centre, Technology Centre, Development Centre and business and technology support services are located. 1997 was a big year for the University as well. This is when they implemented WOLF. WOLF was the online learning framework put in place by the university. They were the first to put in place a system of this kind. They have continued to add to their campuses throughout the years. Plummeting many ways to become the best of their kind at not just providing an education but providing a service. The arts have always been a main focus of the school but, another important area to the school is an advancement of the medical field. They were selected to have the new British Judo Centre of Excellence located at their university. Film makers from the University attended the Royal Television Awards. They launched a New International Academy to support overseas students. Those are some of the big ones. Their biggest achievements though fell in the medical field. They had one of their professors given the Queen’s Nurse Title. The most impact though was that they pioneered translation software that helps medical practitioners. It can be used worldwide to help doctors that are working in a country that is not their own.

They also decided to start a new course that would have students work on reducing the waiting times in hospitals. Besides all of these physical accomplishments they also had a pretty huge one in the area of equalizing women and men’s education at the school. They had a professor put on the list of inspiring women. This they say will help to keep women striving for equivalence in education and rights. These are just a few of the many things that the University has done in the past year. All of these things are made possible by the universities constant work towards quality of what they provide their students.

WHAT IS ISO 9000 IN GENERAL? ISO 9000 is a series of standards that has been deemed to represent good quality management practices by International Consensus, which consists of set standards and guidelines related to quality management systems. This system was developed to ensure that businesses are meeting the needs and expectations of their customers and shareholders. In today’s quality management strategies, the certification of this system is known as ISO 9001. There is 408,000 plus companies in the world, with the amount increasing on a yearly basis.

ISO 9000 series is the most recognized in the world by consumers and businesses alike. When the standards are administered into an organization, a quality management system is implemented that works to increase productivity, reduce unnecessary costs, and ensure quality of recesses and products. The process of implementation takes a bit of work and cooperation from everyone inside the organization for the standards to succeed. The process begins with an auditor coming to the company and auditing the organization on an extensive sample of its sites, functions, products, services and processes.

The auditor presents a list of problems to management. The certification has to be renewed at regular intervals, such as every three years or a specified time period that is set by the certification body.

ADVANTAGES There are many reasons why the ISO 9000 could benefit a company. The ISO 9000 can increase marketability, when business clients realize a company has an ISO 9000 registration it makes them more comfortable with doing business with the company. Having an ISO 9000 makes companies more reputable in the eyes of current and future clients. It shows potential future clients and current clients that their customers are important to them and they hope to provide top quality service. It reduces operational expenses because as a company is applying for the ISO 9000 many areas of the company that are not up to par may be exposed.

This gives the company an opportunity to correct processes that do not run smoothly. Having the ISO 9000 allows the company to have better management control because there is so much information to go through with the registration process of the ISO 000 the members of the business have a better understanding of the company’s overall goal. This process leads to increased customer satisfaction because areas that may have had trouble can be fixed before the error is passed on to the client.

If a problem can be prevented it will save the company time by not having to correct the error and they would not have to work harder at trying to prove to the customer that they are reliable and the clients business is their top priority. There are improved internal communications, the ISO 9000 focuses on self-analysis and operations management problems. This allows different apartments to interact with one another to determine how to meet the demands of their internal customers. Not only does it improve internal communications, but it improves the customer service within the company.

The ISO 9000 allows companies to figure out and change their priorities to help please customers. This also helps make individuals aware of problems that might be involved with employees. The ISO 9000 also benefits a company because it helps reduce product- liability risks. When companies go through ISO 9000 certification the company is less likely to have lawsuits because of the quality of their processes. The ISO 9000 certification allows businesses both big and small catch the eye of investors. When investors realize that a company is ISO 9000 certified they are not as afraid to invest in the company allowing the company to secure funding.

DISADVANTAGES Whenever there are advantages there are also some disadvantages to go along with it. Even though there are many benefits to a company going through ISO 9000 certification there can be some problems that go along with it. Some problems involved with the ISO 9000 certification can be the misunderstanding of the whole process. When the company’s owners do not understand the process and requirements of the ISO 9000 adjust makes it a waste of time on the company. Another problem is the funding to have the ISO 9000; it is a very expensive process especially to smaller businesses.

For a small business to get ISO 9000 certification on average costs about $71 ,OHO. Many small companies do not realize the cost of the ISO 9000 and they are not prepared with adequate funding to be able to afford the certification. This process focuses a lot on documentation of what goes on within the business’s operating procedures. A business cannot go wrong with the ISO 9000 standards because they are an internationally known and reliable system that thousands trust. Organizations that use the standards will be able to advertise this fact. This will gain customer approval and new business opportunities with others who follow the standards. ISO 9000 will also ensure the reputation of a business in any situation when quality is put to question. There is no way anyone would question the well documented processes and proof of quality that clearly shows the integrity and value of the business.
