Without the Rule of Law Anarchy Would Prevail

Without the rule of law, anarchy would prevail. Discuss. Bronagh Buchanan. Morning Short Access. The first thing a person thinks of when they hear of anarchy is, Chaos, mayhem, and lawlessness. There is another side to this, a positive side. Revolutions, fighting for civil rights, standing up for what u believe in. In this essay I am going to discuss how this is a very flippant statement. Anarchy is not necessarily a negative thing. Law needs anarchy to exist. Humanity needs law to exist. So there is a sort of double standard.

In an effort to deliberate this further, research in this area has helped me have a better understanding. Also finding out why and how peoples beliefs make them act in a certain way to become ‘anarchists’. The criminal idea of anarchy. The psychology behind it is very interesting. Law and anarchy is everywhere in life, as simple as a home there is law and anarchy. The ruler and the follower. Life is not simply black and white; there are most certainly more grey shades. “Anarchy is one of the most vague and ambiguous words in language” George Cornewall Lewis 1832.

Laws are emplaced for our protection. People need to have a certain respect for each other whether you are a law abiding citizen or an outlaw. Somewhere as simple as a household there is the clash of personalities. Parents V’s Kids, parents obviously being the dictator, the law. Children, the little anarchists trying to fight the law without even realising what is happening. People can not live side by side without conflict. I think it is impossible. Everyone has opinions, and our own certain way of performing which might cause conflict. Such as in the worlds society.

Not a single person on this earth has no opinion. We couldn’t count how many people, woman, and man child has died fighting for what they believe in, or basic civil rights. Tiananmen Square 1989, there was no one reason. People of China were in mourning of their general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Hu Yaobang. The protestors grew day by day, mostly consisting of teachers, students and workers. Sick and tired of the lack of democracy, the people wanted more civil rights. The demonstration started on April 1989, but was violently ended on may 1989.

Thousands were murdered when the Chinese government sent in army forces and tanks. Everyone remembers the iconic picture of a man standing alone in front of the army tank. This shocked the world and changed Chinese politics for the better. Is the rule of law the anarchists here? Morals are unseen in this circumstance. ‘The Chinese leadership hoped the world would soon forget the Tiananmen Square massacre. Our job in congress is to ensure that we never forget those who lost their lives at Tiananmen Square that day or the pro-democracy cause for which they fought’ Tom Lantos

Knowing the difference between right and wrong, and how we live our lives defines us. The way a person is raised or treated when they are young has a significant effect on a person and their outlook on life. Therefore gives a sense of what our beliefs and morals are. How a person perceives the rule of law and its consequences. A mentally ill person might not have these realistic views. For serious convicted criminals go through psychological treatment through the course of arrest. Serial killers for example know what they have done or about to do is wrong.

They may come from a ‘normal’ upbringing or an unsettled one. It could be an important event which triggers a person’s conscience to take a back seat. There are so many cases on serial killers but little is understood why people do such horrific crimes. In the book, ‘The psychology of serial killer investigations: the grisly business unit’ An author writes about the psychology of serial killers and the law which tries to prevent it. ‘It’s only after time has passed without being caught and a few successful kills that the killer develops the confidence to stride right by the police wearing his mask of invisibility.

But the police many times don’t realize the advantage they have when they’re looking into the first murder, which may have psychological overtones to it. ’ Robert D. Keppel, William J. Birnes, 2003. To say that living in a society, if there was no law anarchy would prevail. This statement is not completely correct and not necessarily wrong either. We live in a world that has innocence and evil. All people can do is try to be the best person they can. Ideally I would like to live in a world where people work together, and not against each other. Make love not war.
