The Suspect Film Review

Derek Rock plays the role of Deputy Riley who is Sheriff Dioxins sidekick throughout the movie. In the experiment one of the social scientists robs the bank to convince the people of the town that the experiment is real. The other one looks at real estate in the area and digs in the dirt to dirty up his pants then walks along the road stating that somebody must have stolen his car or it had been towed. Prefer was seen walking along an isolated road and immediately became a person of interest. Sheriff Dixon arrives to the police station and starts to interrogate Prefer.

Prefer can be seen deliberately encouraging a line f questioning that would substantiate the professors’ hypothesis that bias exists. It then goes to show a week prior to this event taking place where the roles are reversed between Prefer and Brown in another rural town. In this town Brown is referred to as “boy,” when being interrogated. The police department in each of these towns record the interrogation process. At a certain time Prefer shows up to the police department with the bag of money that was stolen from the bank earlier that day.

They explain the whole experiment to the police department they were dealing with. Prefer and Brown explain how they work with local, state, and federal law enforcement in this experiment and give the department a check for “opportunity cost. ” This consists of costs for man power, tires, gas, time, and etcetera. The police department then receives a call from Servants university that Prefer and Brown are indeed doing research for them to back their story. In a particular town the sheriff was so upset that he refused to hand over the tape of the interrogation process forcing them to repeat the experiment.

The movie then flashes back to the current time where they are in Midland and Prefer is the suspect. Sheriff Dixon doesn’t have any evidence that it was Prefer that robbed in the bank. Sheriff Dioxins daughter then asks him why he’s holding Prefer in a jail cell for no reason other than the color of his skin being black. Brown is on his way to the police department where they are holding Prefer when he stops at a gas station and encounters a white couple. This couple takes offense to Brown locking his car doors before entering the store so they decide to slash his tires.

Brown returns to the vehicle and drives off not knowing that he will run his car off a cliff down the road due to this. Prefer suspects something has gone wrong so is forced to explain the experiment alone to the Midland police department. They doubt his story. He figured they would so he then explains how he buried an “insurance policy’ at the real estate he had been looking at earlier that day. Another flash back occurs to a month earlier, where Prefer and Brown are at Servants University.

Brown is seen supervising a psychological experiment. Prefer shows Brown a slideshows explaining that he needs $300,000 dollars for something but never really goes into depth about what it is besides that he an obtain it through the black market. They both then go to the Bronx, New York to get that amount of money in counterfeit to launder the money. These two highly intelligent sociologists have been running a scheme this whole time, because they have been pocketing the real money and returning the counterfeit money.

It returns back to the current time where Prefer is now riding in the back of a police cruiser with Sheriff Dixon and Deputy Riley where they come across the scene of Brown’s accident. Prefer doesn’t know that previously these two came to an agreement that they were going to split the money and kill off Hess two men. This is when they then discover that the money is counterfeit and they did all of this for nothing. As an audience you then find out that the $300,000 dollars was for Fifer’s daughter who had a medical condition that called for a procedure that cost that exact amount.

The social significance of this movie is the idea of a law official trying to intimidate an innocent African-American male repeatedly calling him “boy,” to the point where he feels trapped and starts acting defensive. This repeatedly occurs when both Prefer and Brown are interrogated in both towns in the movie. One sheriffs excuse is that it is how he talks to his son so Brown proceeds to tell him how it offends him. The moment the Sheriff gets heated again he continues to call Brown “boy,” trying to get a reaction out of him.

While Sheriff Dixon and Deputy Riley scramble to get evidence to prove that Prefer is indeed the bank robber the film reveals the bias among both races. As the duo watch the security cameras all they can see of the suspect is the color of his skin, and look at each other with satisfaction symbolizing that this is enough evidence that it was Prefer who committed the robbery. This shows the bias in all-white towns towards African-Americans in these communities that all colored people are criminals.

Sheriff Dixon calls the bank teller to come see if she can identify Prefer as the bank robber. When she arrives Dixon already had put together a lineup of pictures with very familiar faces trying to coerce her into saying that it was prefer. As the woman proceeds to look through the lineup she States to the sheriff that she see what he’s doing. This is like how public defenders try to coerce African-Americans into taking plea bargains because they’d rather plea o a lesser charger where they re not in jail for a longer sentence.

This is due to the fact that the system is bombarded with cases these lawyers pressure African Americans to take these plea deals because they usually don t have the finances for a lawyer that will prove their innocence. In conclusion, greed, corruption, as well as race emerge as central themes throughout this independent movie that has a very unpredictable ending. Because of the two officers stereotypical beliefs of African-American males they fell victim to their greedy corrupt thoughts which lead to consequences hat they were going to have to pay for greatly.
