The Problem With Oliver
Finally and Oliver’s relationship is secret because of Financial mom, named Grading. Finally says that it is because of her mom is Irish, and she can’t have a boyfriend with the name “Oliver” . Think that there IS another – more unconsciously reason. Grading is from Ireland and she keeps holding on to her Irish values. An example Of that is the Hawthorn tree. The tree is standing in front of the house, and Finally describes it as it covers the entire house and making it to a tiny Sleeping Beauty’s palace. Grading refuses to cut it down, because of an Irish folklore.
Grading was young when she got pregnant with Finally, and she had to move from Ireland to get away from her fury family. I’ll bet there was a lot of problems and complications with that… Grading is an artist, and she make figures out of clay. The theme in this novel is the complications there is between mother and daughter, when the daughter is starting to be a grown-up. Finally is annoyed at her mom. There is an episode where her mom tells her about that she had her first “out of body” experience, and Financial reaction is “Her other is mad.
It’s official. ” She says that they don’t even look alike anymore “Not since Finally started straightening her hair”. That’s a typical situation between mother and daughter. They looked like each other before, and they liked the same things but now Finally is starting to change and see things differently. Grading shows Finally what she made today, and she seems like she doesn’t care. The story is written in third person, an omniscient person and it tells about “When Finally was a child, she’d loved Graininess chunky, cackles homunculus”.
That sentence is in past tense, so with that and Financial attitude she don’t seem to care that much anymore… Finally sees her mother as mad, weird and embarrassing. Weird, and embarrassing because of her Irish roots. The hawthorn tree is a big bone of contention between Finally and her mom, and the neighbors. The neighbors because it is so big, and untrimmed because of Graininess folklore. Finally and her mom because thinks that Finally is ashamed being Irish because of their weird folklore. Finally explained of them to nee of her classmates, and they teased her with it after.
She mention it as a big mistake and it underlines the episode. The hawthorn tree is a symbol for Grading. It’s something Irish, and Finally is also embarrassed and annoyed by It. The main problem in the novel is Oliver. Finally has agreed with Oliver, that they will meet in the beach hut the next day. Finally is afraid of what her mom would say or react, if she finds out that she has a boyfriend especially because Grading had her in such a early age. Presenting the first boyfriend you ever got is a big step for a teenage girl.
Someone doesn’t sees it as big problem, but for girls as Finally who is embarrassed about her mom, and thinks she is mad it is – and at the same time she is afraid that she can’t see Oliver anymore because her mother is afraid they’ll have sex, she’s get pregnant and follow her mom in her footsteps. Grading knows about Oliver, so she took the key to the beach hut to prevent them having sex. Finally can’t find the key, so she knows that her mother knows and she is running away for a while. When she comes back she is going to bed, but her mom is gone.
