In “The Road Not Taken” Frost used symbolism to show that the roads were not literal roads hat were walked and drove on, but instead they symbolized the paths that are taken in life. In “After Apple Picking” Frost associated apple picking, or the harvest, with the speaker, and how the end Of the harvest represented the end of his life, or so it seemed. In his works, Robert Frost used symbolism to mislead the reader from the actual meaning of the poem, and to emphasize the relationship between humans and nature. In his writing, Robert Frost used a technique of symbolism to try and fool the reader and mislead them.

For example, in the “Road Not Taken,” the main coco of the poem was about roads. However, these roads were not the roads that people walked on and cars drove on, but instead they represented the paths that are taken in life, such as the choices that are made every day. When Frost said, “two roads diverged in a yellow wood,” he could have meant literal roads, but the two roads have also symbolized two choices, but the speaker was only able to choose one. (ANAL 1 960) Another example of symbolism in Frost’s works is from the poem “After Apple Picking. In this poem, Frost symbolized the harvesting of apples as the life of the speaker, ND how the end of the harvest meant the end of the end of the speaker’s life. Frost says, “But I am done with apple-picking now’ to show that the speaker had finished his job of apple picking, meaning that he has fulfilled his duty on earth, and that he is about to die. (ANAL 1958) In addition with these poems, Frost included symbolism in the poem “Design. ” In this poem, the spider, flower, and the color white had all represented something.

The spider was symbolized as a murderer, and its webs were designed to trap and kill. The flower, which was a heal-all, was supposed to be blue, but it was white in the mom, meaning that something had gone wrong with the flower. Finally, the color white usually represents innocence, but in this poem it is portrayed as something that is potentially evil and corrupted. Frost had introduced everything, when he said, “l found a dimpled spider, fat and white, on a white heal-all, holding up a moth life a white piece of rigid satin cloth. (ANAL 1964) Although everything that Frost introduced symbolized something, it was always a negative thing. Within the works of ‘The Road Not Taken”, “After Apple Picking” and “Design,” Frost had used symbolism to try and fool the deader. In addition with Frost’s technique of symbolism, he had also focused on the inner to outer nature of humans and nature. In his poem, ‘ ‘The Road Not Taken,” Frost spoke about how humans and nature are always connected, just like the roads.

The outer part is what is walked on, and the inner part is the choices that are made. When Frost said, “two roads diverged in a wood and l- I took the one less traveled by,” on the outside it meant that the speaker finally chose a path, but on the inside he had made a personal choice within himself. (ANAL 1 960) Another example of Frost’s inner to outer nature s found in “After Apple Picking,” when the speaker said, “beside it, and there may be two or three Apples I didn’t pick upon some bough. But I am done with apple-picking now. (ANAL 1 958) Frost had shown that nature, or the apple picking, and the speaker are connected, and that the apples that were picked signified the accomplishments that were made throughout his life, and that the unpicked apples were the goals that he was not able to achieve. Even though there were still some apples, or goals, left, he was satisfied with what he had done, which was why he was done with apple picking. Even after writing these two poems, Frost’s style of inner to Outer nature did not Stop there.

In his poem “Design,” he tried to show that the speaker was questioning the nature of the flower, the spider, and the moth, to try and find the relationship between them and why they were all white. When the speaker had questioned, ‘What had that flower to do with being white, the wayside blue and innocent heal-all? What brought the kindred spider to that height, then steered the white moth thither in the night,” he had tried to find out what the flower had done to become white, even though it was supposed o be blue and innocent.

Within all of these poems, Frost used to style of inner to outer nature to show the relationship between humans and nature. Even though Frost’s technique of symbolism and his style of inner to outer nature are important, the twists within his poems are equally important. In one of his trickiest and decision-less poem, ‘The Road Not Taken,” the speaker was conflicted on which path he should take. He said that both paths were equally great, and that he should be able to take both paths, but after some tedious and intensive thinking he realized that he cannot take both tats, and that he was only able to take one.

Finally, at the end of the poem, he said, “l took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. ” (ANAL 1960) When the speaker had finally choice a path, he said that it made all the difference. However, the twist here is that Frost never said that the difference was positive. It could have meant that he became a total failure, but it also could have meant he became successful. The twists by Frost was not only in this one poem, but it is also in his poem, “After Apple Picking,” when the speaker talks about how he is finished with apple picking.

He said “this sleep Of mine, whatever sleep it is. Were he not gone, the woodchuck could say whether it’s like his long sleep, as I describe its coming on, or just some human sleep” to question if he was going to fall into a normal human sleep, or if he was going to die. (ANAL 1958) In another one of Frost’s poem, “Design,” he included the twist by showing that the spider, moth, and the flower were all related to death and disfigurement. They were all white and corrupted, and the speaker saw them all as one thing, bound to each other by their similar characteristics.

The speaker said they were all “mixed ready to begin the morning right, like the ingredients of a witches’ broth” to show that the spider, moth, and flower were all one thing in the eyes of the speaker and the witches. (ANAL 1964) Without a doubt, the twists by Frost were made in order to mislead the readers from the actual meaning of the poem, sort of like a plot twist within movies. Within all of his poems, Robert Frost had tried to connect the relationships between humans and nature, and deceive that reader from the true meaning of the poem using symbolism within his works, making the reader dig deeper not his poems.
