* In William Golding’s “Lord of the flies” order disintegrates because of Jacks violent hunger for power of the boys. Through out the book Jacks bickering with Ralph for total power over the boys starts to brake apart order in them. Jacks face swam near Ralph with a look of aggression and then Jack snapped, “And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do. You can’t hunt you can’t sing-” Ralph-“ I’m chief. I was chosen. ” Jack- “Why should choosing make any difference?

Just giving orders that don’t make any sense-. ” Democracy has no value for Jack. His ambition blinds him to the point where he sees no “sense” in Ralph’s grounded and reasonable orders. Also, he is trying to show the other boys that he is above Ralph’s power and is also teaching them to refuse to go along with Ralph’s orders. Jack continues to show this in other parts of the books. Jack spoke with a voice of authority, “ Give me a drink. ” Henry brought him a shell and he drank, watching Piggy and Ralph over the jagged rim.

order now

Power lay in the brown swell of his forearms: authority sat on his shoulders and chattered in his ear like an ape. “All sit down. ” The boys ranged themselves in rows on the grass before him but Ralph and piggy stayed a foot lower, standing on the soft sand. Jack ignored them for the moment, turned his mask down to the seated boys and pointed at them with his spear. “Who is going to join my tribe? ” Jack wears his chiefdom with all the pomp and circumstance that was notably absent from Ralph’s character.

Jack goal is to now break down what Ralph and Piggy were trying to build make it look like a failure and lure the boys into his trap of manipulation. Jack finishes of his goal by using manipulation on boys and that’s how he ends any order that was on the island. By the middle of the book there is a so-called “beastie” that is terrifying the kids on the island and Jack plays this to his advantage. Because of Jacks hunger for all the power on the island he destroys every hope the boys had for order within themselves.
