We will look at the fulfillment of prophecy, the starting time and event for the prophecy, the division of the weeks within he prophecy and the purpose of the prophecy. My approach to the Daniel prophecy was that somewhat uncertain. I have read about it before, but never gave it a lot of attention. Now having read the commentary I have a better understanding of it. This has truly been a learning experience. God does not leave us to figure it things out on our own.

The word of scripture is our example of how God reveals himself to us and through us. As Daniel seeks to understand this prophecy, God sends his holy angel to deliver an answer to Daniels prayer. Even though it is delayed, he surely answers. In Daniel Chapter 9:2, the revelation of Daniel s seventy weeks came to him as an answer to prayer. Daniel understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolation of Jerusalem.

God showed him that the refining judgments of Israel would come to an end, and their acceptance of Messiah would bring in everlasting righteousness. The prophecy lays out a time frame for Messianic prediction from the time of Daniel to establishing of the millennial kingdom. The time frame of the events weeks or “Seventy Sevens” is associated with Daniels people, the Jews and the holy city, Jerusalem.

Daniel 9:24- 27 reads, 4 “Seventy ‘sevens'[a] are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish[b] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[d] the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens. ‘ It will be rebuilt with trees and a trench, but in times of trouble. 6 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. [e] The people of the ruler will come destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood; war will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven. ‘[f] In the middle of the ‘seven’ [g] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[h] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. “[is ( NIB) a judgment upon his people for their effuse to follow him.

The three things are negative, undesirable elements, which are going to be removed during the program of the Seventy Sevens. The second three things are positive, desirable elements, which are to be affected during the program of the Seventy Sevens. Wallboard speaks of this period in the prophecy that embraces six major elements described in the phrases: ( 1) “finish put an end to sin , (3)” to atone for wickedness,”(4)”to bring in everlasting righteousness,” (5) “to seal up vision and prophecy, and (6) “to anoint the most holy. ” There is no explanation given or the six prophecies and this poses a problem for the interpreter.

Gabriel told Daniel that seventy weeks are determined for “your people” and for ‘Your holy city. ” First, the Hebrew word translated “week” is shaved. It means “seven. ” In Hebrew, the phrase “seventy weeks” is “seventy sevens. ” It is possible to have seventy sevens of minutes, seventy sevens of days, seventy seven of weeks, seventy seven of years, or seventy seven of anything.

However, because Daniel was reading Jeremiah ; s prophecy about Judas spending seventy years in captivity in Babylon when he started praying. Scholars who symbolize the sevens generally take the decree of Cyrus issued in 538 B. C. S the beginning date for the seventy sevens. Scholars have suggested the decree of Arteries to Ezra (458 B. C. ) as the starting point of the seventy sevens (e. G. , Archer, Wood, and J. B. Payne). This decree permitted Ezra and there Jews to return to Palestine and concerned the establishment and practice of the proper services at the temple (Ezra 7:11-26). Again, there was no specific command to rebuild the city of Jerusalem. A second decree of Arteries issued to Anemia (445 B. C. ) is a popular view (e. Actually, this does not seem to have been a formal decree but involved permission for Anemia to visit Palestine (Nee. 215-8). Nevertheless, Arteries ‘ words to Anemia probably meet the criteria of the dbr, which may mean “decree, message, r word. ” This decree to Anemia specifically mentions the rebuilding of Jerusalem (Nee. 2:5), which is the strongest argument in favor of it. It seems that the third decree specifically refers to the rebuilding of Jerusalem, but it is reasonable to assume that all three orders allowing the Jews return to their land implied permission to rebuild the city.

It seems clear from the writing of Ezra and Anemia that the city was still in a state of ruins in their day, almost one hundred years after the first return from captivity. The view accepted here is that the decree to Ezra in 458 B. C. S the correct starting point for the seventy sevens, but a survey of the events contained in the first sixty-nine sevens is necessary to demonstrate the appropriateness of this option. During this period, a number of important events most take place. Jerusalem would be restored, but most important an Anointed One would come who would be “cut off. Sometime later, Jerusalem and the temple would be destroyed during a time of war. There will be a total of sixty-nine sevens (seven sevens plus sixty-two sevens) would pass, and then a memorable event would take place, the “Anointed One, the ruler, would come. Anointed One” is a translation of the Hebrew mEIA also rendered “Messiah” (KAVA, NASA). Mah was a term that could designate kings and priests. Thus, it seems that this “Anointed One” must be a priest, a king, or someone who is both. Gabriel was telling Daniel that after the second time period of sixty -O. . To weeks (434 years) Jesus would be cut off (crucified). He would have nothing; no earthly possessions, home, throne, or kingdom. In fact, he would not have put an end to sin, finished transgression, or fulfilled all the visions and prophecies either. Jesus would die before doing everything that God decreed or him to do. But there was another important point. Gabriel mentioned a prince who will come. This reference to the coming Antichrist’s and it is important because it identifies the group of nations he will come out of.

The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70, so the Romans are the people of the prince who will come. This tells us when the Antichrist’s comes he will come out of the nations that made up the Old Roman Empire during the earthly life of Jesus. This brings us to the final point. We have looked at the first two time periods: seven weeks (49) and sixty-two weeks (434 years). This is a total of sixty -nine weeks or 483 years. However, God said seventy weeks or 490 years would pass before everything was fulfilled. This means he must start his clock again so the last seven years can tick off.

We have already noticed four things that would happen after the period of sixty- two weeks (arrears): First, Jesus would be killed (AD 32, (2) Jerusalem would be destroyed (AD 70), (3) the temple would be destroyed (AD 70), and the Temple and Jerusalem would be desolate until the Time of the End. These four things would happen before God starts the clock again. The clock is topped right now. It has been over 1,900 years, and we do not know when he will restart it. However, most prophetic experts think it will be soon because Jerusalem is no longer desolate and many of the Jews are seeking to rebuild the Temple.

Verse 27- This confirmation of God s covenant promises to the “many” of Israel will occur in the middle of the seventh week, which parallels “after the sixty-two [and seven] weeks” (v. 26), while giving more information. We know that Christ’ s three and a half year ministry was decidedly focused on the Jews in the first half of the seventieth week (Matt. 0:b, CB. 15:24). For the period of three and one half years after the crucifixion, the apostles focused almost exclusively on the Jews, beginning first “in Judea” (Acts 1:8; 2:14) because “the gospel of Christ” is “for the Jew first” (Room. , CB. 2:1 0; John 4:22). There are two major events that are prophesied- the climax of the prophecy concerns two events that will take place after the sixty -ninth “seven” and apparently not in the seventieth “seven. ” This introduces a major controversy in the interpretation Of this passage. The two events mentioned are, first, that the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing (v. 26), which seems to be clear reference to the death of Jesus Christ as Messiah. Second, “the people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary’.

The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed” (v. 26). This occurred in AD. 70, or 37 years after the death of Christ, which is too long a period to be described as 7 years. The problem of interpretation is that these two events are said to be after the sixty-two “sevens”, or the 483 years, but apparently not the final 7 years. The implication is that there is a gap period between the end of the 483 and the beginning of the final 7 years. There are several views on the interpretation of this passage.

Millennialism interpretation – is that there is no intervening time period and has been opposed by the millenarian who do not believe a future 7;year period will be literally fulfilled. They attempt to find the final areas in history. Generally speaking this is accomplished by ignoring literal fulfillment. There is an objection to the Millennialism view- that can be raised to indemnifying the new covenant brought in by the death of Christ with a even -year covenant mentioned in Daniel. The covenant of grace as instituted by Christ does not exist for 7 years but continues forever.

It does not seem to be the reference of Daniel 9. The Parliamentarians view -? believe that in this time period two events, the death of Christ and the destruction of Jerusalem, occurs at least 33 years apart. It would be impossible to compact these two events into 3 h years of the prophecy. For these and other reason, the parliamentarians interpretation is considered preferable as providing a more literal interpretation of the prophecy. A study f the events recorded for the last 7 years of the 490 years also seems to relate clearly to events that are yet future.

The fulfillment of the prophecy- if the 490 years begin in 445 B. C. , it would provide fulfillment for the 483 years by A. D. 33. In the computation, the prophetic year of 360 days must be understood in keeping with scriptural prophecy where this is consistently used. The Jewish calendar of 12 months of 30 days each, with provision that after enough days had accumulated a thirteenth month would be added to the correct the calendar. In prophecy, however, this thirteenth month is not insider. In Revelation 1 and 12:6, for instance, the 3 h years of 360 days is confirmed by the use of 1 ,260 days.

Also, 42 months is the same period (Rev. 11 13:5). The expression , “a time ,times, and a half a time “It is also considered as 3 h years: a “time “equals 1 year, ‘times” equal 2 years, and ” half a time” equals 6 months, for a total of 3 h years keeping with other prophecy (Dan. 7:25; 12:7; Rev. 12:14). Until recently it was assumed that modern scholarship has given credence to the conclusion that the death of Christ occurred in 33RD. Which would fit precisely into the pattern of 483 ears, leaving the last seven years to be fulfilled some time after the death of Christ.

In conclusion: Based on all the various views being considered and arguments pro and con are evaluated, the Only point Of view that really satisfies the passage and provides a literal fulfillment is the view that begins the 490 years at BIBB. C. Concludes that the first 483 years in AAA. D. At the time of Christ death, and then postpones the last 7 years until the seven preceding the second coming of Christ, which is obviously still future. A future ruler will observe a covenant with Israel during the first 3 h of that period and ill become the world ruler in the final years before the Second coming.
