6. Definition. “Communication channels through which news, entertainment, education, data or promotional messages are disseminated. Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet” . It is a medium by virtue of which the thoughts, feelings, ideas, concepts and information are conveyed to the masses. In simple terms, what we call media today is actually all about mass education, communication and participation.
7. Types of Media
a. Informative Media. This type of media includes news shows, newspapers, informative web sites, etc.
b. Educational Media. Such as books, educational videos, or educational software programmes.
c. Persuasive Media. It includes advertising, television infomercials, newspaper editorials, or web sites that attempt to persuade.
d. Entertainment Media. It deals with entertainment magazines, movies, novels or entertainment related web sites.
8. Sources of Media. Different tools by which media influences minds of its viewers are as under:-
a. Television. TV is perhaps most commonly available media to approach masses. It has become necessity of each home and plays a very imp role by broadcasting wishful propaganda in the form of news bulletins, dramas, cultural shows, music programs, discussions and seminars.
b. Satellite. Satellite is dominating the electromagnetic spectrum since last two decades. It is a very effective means of transmitting the required information from one part of the world to another. Its effects can be seen in recent Gulf conflict through news coverage by CNN and BBC.
c. Computer. Computer has revolutionized the media warfare with the induction of internet, through which it is very easy to propagate anything anywhere in the world.
d. Radio. Radio again is an instrument used for media warfare and is very effective tool due to its coverage and access to people.
