The 15th amendment of the constitution protects the right of Americans to vote in election and to pick they’re leaders, it also granted African American men the right to vote and it declared that the right of citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the Unite Sates based on their color, race, or previous conditions of slavery.
The House of Representative passed the 15 amendment on February 25, 1869 by a vote of 144 to 44. The senate passed the 15 amendment on February 26, 1869 by a vote of 39 to 13. And finally it was rafted on March 30, 1870 the secretary of state Hamilton Fish issued a proclamation certifying the ratification of the 15 amendment a year later. The First ten states to raft it was Nevada, West Virginia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Maine, Massachusetts, and Arkansas. Although the Amendment was passed it took 10 year to finally let African American to vote but it was very hard for them to do so, because when going to voting places a lot of them would have to pay poll taxes for them to cast their vote, in places they would also make them all take test which only if they passed were they allowed to vote but due to so many African Americans that were uneducated they would not pass and there for not vote, in many places too whites would gather and yell racist comments to then they would grab them and even killed them to stop them from voting, especially the south, and this discrimination went on until 1965 when the Voting Right Act this was to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that denied black their right vote under the 15th amendment.
In March of 1857, the United States Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, declared that all blacks — slaves as well as free — were not and could never become citizens of the United States.
