Welcome to the Fantastic Voyage! I will be your tour guide as we travel through the body of a female patient in a microscopic submarine. The submarine will enter through the right femoral vein and travel to the lower lobe of the right lung via the right pulmonary artery and exit the body through the nose. This should be a fun voyage, so sit back and enjoy the ride.
The Fantastic Voyage begins as the micro-submarine is injected into an area called the femoral triangle located on the inner – upper thigh of the female patient. The femoral vein is located within the femoral triangle in the inguinal –femoral area; the superior border is formed by the inguinal ligament, the medial border is surrounded by the adductor longus, and the lateral side is by the Sartorius muscle (Neelu, 2012). This is an excellent area to gain access to the right femoral vein and begin our voyage. The femoral vein (one of the larger vessels in the venal system) transports oxygen-deficient blood from the lower extremities and pelvic area to the heart (Healthline Body Maps, n.d.). The femoral vein passes through the groin area and enters the abdomen where it becomes the right external iliac vein. Before we travel into the abdomen , I would like to point out some of the female reproductive organs that can be seen in this area: First you will notice the uterus where a fertilized egg will implant itself and grow, then connected to the uterus are the right and left fallopian tubes which serve as ducts for the ovaries , even though they are not attached to them, and finally the ovaries ( one on the left and one on the right) where the ova ( sex cells) are produced ( Thibodeau & Patton, 2008).
