Even though he is able to speak about his wounding during the war, Nick comes extremely close to a mental collapse during the short story (Hannah 7). Hemingway uses “A Way You’ll Never Be” to explain the psychological consequences of Nick being wounded in combat (Newswomen 1). By focusing on the war experiences in “A Way You’ll Never Be,” Hemming. Ay shows how the war has affected the present for Nick Adams. In addition to discussing baseball in “The Three Day Blow,” Nick Adams and Bill Smith end up having a serious discussion about Nick’s recent broken relationship with his girlfriend Marjorie. By including the discussion between Nick and Bill about the romance with Marjorie, Hemingway shows that Nick’s life involves more complicated subjects like relationships and ending relationships (Newswomen 1). The conversation between Nick and Bill starts out on the subject of baseball and ends on a more serious subject of an ended important relationship in Nick’s life (Flora 4).

Bill tries to assure Nick that he can move on without Marjorie, but Nick seems to be heavily saddened by their breakup (Flora 4). Nick states that he feels guilty and regretful because he will probably never get the chance to see Marjorie again (Flora 4). Additionally, Nick tells Bill that he is upset about his and Marjoram’s breakup because they had plans to go to Italy together and experience important events as a couple (Flora 4). By including the dates from the baseball discussion, Hemingway allows the reader to figure out the day that the legislation ends between Nick and Marjorie (Hurley 47).

By focusing on constructing a coherent short story, Hemingway uses the outcome of Nick’s youthful romance with Marge and the events transpiring in the major leagues during September 191 6 to balance each other (Hurley 53).
