Cowgirls Don’t Cry: Song Analysis

“Cowgirls Don’t Cry” The song I chose to analyze was “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” by Brooks and Dunn. This song’s lyrics really speaks to me because I was always told this when I was younger and I rode my horse. My Aunt would always tell me, “If you fall or get thrown, brush it off and Cowgirl up don’t you cry and get back in that saddle. ” At first the tone is strong like the father was being towards the daughter telling her that “Cowgirls Don’t Cry”.

Then as the lyrics go further on the tone changes and it gets sad because the girl knows that the one she has always looked up too and made proud is becoming weak as the child she used to be. There is deep imagery used in these lyrics when they are describing the dad giving the girl her first pony, and teaching her how to ride and she kept falling. I remember all too well when my Aunt got me my first pony and I was learning how to ride and how so many times my feet would slip out the stir-ups and I would fall.

This song is in some ways narrative and didactic at the same time. They use the lyrics in a way to tell a story of a young girl and her father and the different stages of life that the girl goes through along with her struggles. Then it also teaches a lesson that yes, we need to be strong as most cowgirls are but yet there does come in life where even the best of us do break down and cry especially when it comes to the one that we had the deepest connection too and the one we really looked up to the most.

Because they say, “Cowgirls don’t cry, ride, baby, ride, Lessons in life are gonna show you in time soon enough you’re gonna know why, it’s gonna hurt every now and then if you fall get back on again Cowgirls don’t cry” Stating at the end that we have to keep moving forward and go on with life, that we are going to have things thrown at us in life that hurt or bring us down just like getting thrown off are horse but we have to brush it off an keep going even through the pain.
