A Story of Courage and Hope: Gabrielle Giffords
Then she achieved a masters in regional planning from Cornell university in New York. She also studied in Chihuahua, Mexico on a William Fulbright Scholarship. Gabrielle went to Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Gabrielle worked at her family’s tire business before congress. She was the president and Chief of El Camp Tire Warehouse before he sold it to Goodyear in 2000. The struggles she faced while running a small business prepared her for later on in her career. Two influences in Gabrielle Gifford’ rarer are her many titles and club memberships and also her injuries.
Gabrielle Gifford accomplished many things in her political career, one of which being her titles and club memberships. Gabrielle Gifford was in many different groups that worked with technology, politics, NASA, science, and many more (“Gabrielle Gifford”2). Gabrielle is President of the Atlantic Cassock. Of Young Political Leaders, representative of National Committee on China-US Relations as a Young Leader’s Forum Fellow and a German Marshall Fund Manfred-Werner Fellow (“Gabrielle D. Gifford”l ). She was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2000 and spent two years there.
She was elected to the Arizona State Senate in 2002, but she resigned from that position in 2005 because she was preparing her run for congress. She was elected to US Congress on November 7, 2006 and elected for a second term in 2008 and a third in 201 0 (“Gabrielle Gifford”2). These are many of the titles and club memberships that helped influence Gabrielle in her career. Another influence that Gabrielle had in her life was her injuries. Gabrielle experienced a tragedy when she was shot in the head and survived. That influenced Gabrielle because it made her end her political career.
On January 8, 2011 Gabrielle Gifford was having an informal political meeting called Congress on Your Corner. She was shot in the head in the grocery store parking lot where she was having the meeting. She underwent immediate emergency surgery (“Gabrielle Gifford”2). After her surgery Gifford was responding well to her doctors: “She gave the thumbs up sign and tried to pull on her breathing tube” (“Gabrielle Gifford”2). Nearly half of her skull was moved, but by the second week of January, she was able to breathe on her own and even open her eyes (“Gabrielle Gifford”2).
Jarred Lee Laughter is a man with schizophrenia; he was the man who shot Gabrielle Gifford. Gabrielle Gifford was not the only person injured on that fateful day: “Laughter, who is accused of killing a nine year old as well as US District Court Judge John Roll, and four other adults is a guest of the US Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield MO” (Coos 1). Gabrielle Gifford was released from the rehab center on June 15, 201 1. In August 201 1, she .NET to Washington for the first time since being shot.
